Brushes With The Truth

Zone Of Interest - A Film By Jonathan Glazer

Based on the book, The Zone of Interest by Martin Amis, it's the domestic life of Hoss, the commandant of Auschwitz. Scenes in his home adjacent to the camp. Views of the chimneys in the background - distant but not too distant - belching red in the night.

Sounds from beyond the garden, but nothing to see except the wall, the barbed wire, and the chimney.

A dog, a family pet that runs around from room to room and into the garden, tying the house and the garden together, bliss next to horror.

Domestic bliss as Hoss's wife's mother comes to visit. A joke about the poor unfortunates next door. Mother cannot sleep, looking in the night, at what those chimneys are belching. Mother leaves, leaving a note for her daughter. Irritated, the daughter reads and puts the note in the fire.

Officers, comrades in work, gather in the garden to wish Hoss happy birthday.
